All about Teaching Phonics

What is phonics:

Relationship between phonemes and graphemes is called phonics

OR

Phonics instruction teaches the relationships between the letters of written language and the sounds of spoken language. Children's reading development is dependent on their understanding of the alphabetic principle the idea that letters and letter patterns represent the sounds of spoken language. "Decoding" is the act of sounding out words using phonics.

Model of Phonics:

1Systematic: the letter-sound relationship is taught in an organized and logical sequence

2Explicit: The instruction provides teachers with precise directions for teaching letter-sound relationships

  • Effective phonics programs provide Frequent opportunities for children to apply what they are learning about letters and sounds to the reading of words, sentences, and stories.
  • Systematic and explicit phonics instruction: Significantly improves children's word recognition, spelling, and reading comprehension is most effective when it begins in kindergarten or first grade but should be used as part of a comprehensive reading program with students at risk for reading disabilities or who have been identified as having a reading disability like dyslexion.

Why Phonics is important:
  • Phonics play a key role in helping students comprehend text.
  • Helps to student sound in to spelling.
  • Helps to students to gate sound (Pronunciation Sound)
  • Decode the word
  • Word recognizes
  • Increase reading fluency (speed, rapidness, smoothness & accuracy)
  • Phonics improve spelling ability
  • Half of all English words can be spelled with phonics rules, that relate to one letter to one sound.
  • Know about relationship between grapheme & phoneme.

Approaches to sounding out words:
  • Make the 1st sound & add the rime. Examples. B + AT = BAT B + OAT = BOAT.
  • Look at the rime 1st & put it together backward. Examples. Dream: Rime = ream (add 1st sound “D” from backward of Rime).
  • Ask yourself what I know about this word Example: Appointment (I know word point from Appointment).
  • Say to yourself: Examples: Glisten: (I know the word listen, which looks like this word, adding “G” in front of listen & make it “Glisten”).
