STAGES OF READING DEVELOPMENT

01) Emerging Reading stage:


  • Recognises well-known logos and signage
  • Recognises some letters and their sounds Recognises that print has significance.
  • Comprehends the fundamentals of printing (left to right and top to bottom)

02) Early Reading Stage:


  • Knows and names the majority of letters.
  • Recognises relationships between letters and sounds.
  • Reads simple words using fundamental decoding abilities.
  • Starts reading well-known and predictable material.
  • Relies on context and visual clues to facilitate reading

03) Transitional Reading stage:

 

  • Reads more accurately and fluently.
  • Expands their knowledge of sight words; learns how to interpret unknown words; and starts to understand lengthier and more complicated texts.
  • Starts reading silently.

04) Fluent Reading Stage:

 

  • Reads quickly, precisely, and expressively.
  • Recognises and comprehends a variety of words.
  • Applies automated decoding techniques.
  • Comprehends and evaluates a variety of texts.
  • Increases vocabulary and comprehension.

05) Advanced Reading stage:

 

  • Independently and widely reads.
  • Demonstrates a high level of comprehension.
  • Critically analysing and evaluating literature.
  • Uses reading to explore interests and learn new things.
  • Use reading techniques for a variety of topics and categories.
